Christchurch is located on the east coast of the South Island. Flat-bottomed punts glide on the Avon River, which meanders through the city centre. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast, along the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets. Tautuku Peninsula is a rocky headland in the Catlins on the south coast of Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. The only access is via the mouth of the Fleming River, or along Tautuku Beach. Curio Bay is a coastal embayment in the Southland District of New Zealand, best known as the site of a petrified forest some 180 million years old. Tuatapere is a small rural town in Southland, New Zealand. The Waiau River flows through the town before reaching Te Waewae Bay, where it has its outflow into Foveaux Strait. The Eglinton Valley is one of only a few places in New Zealand with large areas of lowland beech forest. There are plants and wildlife here that you won’t find anywhere else in the world, including more than 30 rare, threatened or endangered species. Milford Sound is known for towering Mitre Peak, plus rainforests and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen falls, which plummet down its sheer sides. The fiord is home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory offers views of rare black coral and other marine life. Boat tours are a popular way to explore.
